Substitute Teacher – Elementary & Middle School

The Crescent Academy is seeking dependable, flexible, and student-centered Substitute Teachers to support our Elementary and Middle School programs when regularly assigned teachers are absent.

Substitute Teachers play an important role in maintaining continuity of learning, preserving established classroom routines, and ensuring that students remain safe, engaged, and appropriately supervised throughout the school day. Assignments may range from occasional daily coverage to multi-day or longer-term placements.

Qualified candidates may be considered for general elementary classrooms, middle-school subject areas, Islamic Studies, Quran, Arabic, physical education, health, art, music, or other assignments that match their education, experience, and demonstrated skills. Per diem, part-time, and long-term substitute opportunities may be available.

Key Responsibilities

Classroom Instruction & Continuity

  • Follow the absent teacher’s lesson plans, schedules, classroom routines, and instructional expectations as closely as possible.
  • Deliver clear, age-appropriate instruction and help students complete assigned lessons, classwork, projects, assessments, and independent work.
  • Use available curriculum materials, classroom technology, textbooks, and teacher-provided resources responsibly and effectively.
  • Maintain the instructional pace of the class while making reasonable adjustments when needed to support student understanding and participation.
  • Avoid introducing significant changes to curriculum, assignments, grading expectations, or classroom procedures unless authorized by school leadership.

Classroom Management & Student Supervision

  • Create and maintain a safe, orderly, respectful, inclusive, and productive learning environment.
  • Communicate classroom expectations clearly and use constructive, age-appropriate, and consistent classroom-management practices.
  • Supervise students actively during class periods, transitions, arrival, dismissal, lunch, recess, assemblies, prayer, hallways, field activities, and other assigned duties.
  • Promote student responsibility, kindness, integrity, patience, cooperation, and respect for classmates, staff, property, and the broader Academy community.
  • Seek assistance promptly when student behavior, safety concerns, medical needs, or classroom conditions exceed the substitute teacher’s authority or ability to address them safely.

Attendance, Assignments & Teacher Follow-Up

  • Take accurate attendance and complete all required classroom, dismissal, meal, supervision, or student-accountability records.
  • Collect, organize, and safeguard completed student work, assessments, notes, materials, and other items as directed.
  • Leave the classroom organized and provide the regularly assigned teacher with a clear written summary of lessons completed, student participation, unfinished work, significant incidents, and follow-up needs.
  • Maintain appropriate confidentiality regarding students, families, personnel, academic records, behavioral matters, and school operations.

Student Safety & Support

  • Follow all Academy procedures related to student supervision, emergency response, illness, injury, allergies, authorized student release, visitor access, and building safety.
  • Respond calmly and promptly to drills, emergencies, student distress, bullying, suspected abuse or neglect, threats, or other safety concerns and immediately involve the appropriate school personnel.
  • Follow student support plans, accommodation instructions, health alerts, behavior plans, and other written guidance made available for the assignment.
  • Maintain professional boundaries and protect the dignity, privacy, safety, and well-being of every student.

Professional Communication & School Responsibilities

  • Report on time, prepared to begin the assignment, and remain for the full scheduled work period unless released by an authorized administrator.
  • Check in and out according to school procedures and review assignment-specific schedules, lesson plans, supervision duties, safety information, and special instructions.
  • Communicate respectfully and professionally with students, families, teachers, office staff, school leadership, and other members of the Academy community.
  • Follow Academy policies, staff directions, technology expectations, dress and conduct standards, confidentiality requirements, and all applicable employment and safety procedures.
  • Accept reasonable reassignment during the day when student coverage or operational needs change.

Long-Term Substitute Responsibilities

  • For longer assignments, prepare or adapt lesson plans in coordination with school leadership and grade-level or subject-area colleagues.
  • Assess student work, maintain grades and records, provide timely feedback, and complete progress or report-card documentation as assigned.
  • Communicate appropriately with parents or guardians regarding student progress, assignments, concerns, and classroom expectations when authorized.
  • Participate in staff meetings, parent conferences, student-support meetings, professional development, and collaborative planning appropriate to the length and scope of the assignment.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent and demonstrated ability to support instruction and supervision in an elementary or middle school environment.
  • Experience working responsibly with school-age children through teaching, tutoring, childcare, youth programming, coaching, mentoring, camp, community service, or a related setting.
  • Ability to understand and follow lesson plans, schedules, written procedures, safety requirements, and verbal instructions.
  • Strong communication, organization, judgment, reliability, flexibility, punctuality, and professional follow-through.
  • Ability to manage a classroom respectfully, maintain appropriate authority, and seek assistance when needed.
  • Commitment to The Crescent Academy’s mission, values, policies, student-safety expectations, and respectful faith-based learning environment.
  • Ability to successfully complete all applicable background checks, fingerprinting, clearances, reference verification, and employment requirements for work in a school setting.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree, associate degree, college coursework, or current enrollment in Education, a subject area, child development, or a related field.
  • New York State teaching certification, substitute-teaching authorization, teaching-assistant credential, or another relevant educational credential.
  • Prior substitute-teaching, classroom-teaching, paraprofessional, tutoring, or student-teaching experience.
  • Experience working with elementary or middle-school students in a private, public, charter, religious, or community-based educational setting.
  • Subject-area expertise in elementary education, Math, English Language Arts, Science, Social Studies, Islamic Studies, Quran, Arabic, physical education, health, art, music, or another area offered by the Academy.
  • Experience supporting multilingual learners, students with learning differences, or students requiring academic, behavioral, or social-emotional support.
  • Familiarity with classroom technology, learning-management systems, interactive displays, and digital educational tools.

Physical & Work Requirements

The Substitute Teacher must be able to perform the following essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation:

  • Stand, walk, and actively supervise students for extended periods throughout the school day.
  • Move throughout classrooms, hallways, stairs, playgrounds, gym spaces, and other indoor or outdoor areas of the campus.
  • Bend, reach, sit, rise from seated positions, and assist with routine classroom materials and activities.
  • Lift or carry classroom materials and supplies weighing up to approximately 25 pounds.
  • Hear, observe, and respond promptly to student communication, alarms, announcements, and safety concerns.
  • Work indoors and outdoors in conditions normally associated with school supervision and student activities.
